Keiuko laid still on a patch of grass that was shielded from the sun. She thought about what words she would use, the best way to start the sentence, how to break it all down. It was good news, probably the best she has ever received, yet the becoming of its reality terrified her.
“Dad and I are leaving Lumbre tomorrow,” she finally declared, her fingers curling onto tufts of grass to keep herself grounded. Keiuko heard a hum; an anticlimactic response to the news that had left her restless for a whole day.
She immediately sat up, a scowl aimed at the woman with cornflower blue hair.
“Aren’t you sad, Pisces?” Keiuko asked with strain in her voice, eyes grazing at the opalescent scales that lined Pisces’ cheekbones before settling onto the woman’s entire face.
It wasn’t about the length of the response that rubbed her the wrong way, rather it was the lightness and lack of concern that rode on that monotonous tune.
Wouldn’t she have felt the same? Wouldn’t the years they’ve spent together amount enough for tears and sorrow when the time to part ways arrived?
“Of course I am, child,” Pisces admitted in a soft voice that was unrestrained of emotion. And for the first time, Keiuko saw the shattered pieces that were always hidden in the spirit’s eyes.
Up before the alarm rang, before the sun had even risen.
If Keiuko had had the chance to say goodbye, that was what she imagined the situation to be like. She would stare long and hard at Pisces’ black eyes to search for some sliver of emotion within them. As far as imagination goes, reality spared Keiuko the farewell and left her only with curiosities.
She got out of bed and drew the curtains back, pushed the windows open and made herself cosy on the window seat.
“Are any of your brothers or sisters here, Pisces?” Keiuko asked while she gazed into the brightening dark, a little bit of wishful thinking skipping through her mind. “I’d like to meet them...”
One thought after the other, she wondered if anyone else was like her...
...Tied to a realm of magic, with creatures from dreams and nightmares.
